| Staying healthy while trekking is extremely important as medical facilities might be limited in some areas. Getting lots of sleep, eating good food, drinking lots of water, avoiding alcohol and listening to your body are all good preventative measures. While ascending to high altitudes some people experience AMS (acute mountain sickness). However you can rest, drink lots of water and take medicine to combat the effects, if your conditions worsens your guide will escort you to a lower elevation and assist you in finding help. Your guide will also help you stock supplies, medicine and a first aid kit before you depart on your trek and give you the psychological support you need if you get ill and advise you on how to treat symptoms and when to get help. Along some routes there are western medical facilties and clinics available but should you fall ill in an isolated area your guide will need to arrange for helicopter rescue. Most illnesses encountered on a trek are not serious, however being prepared, following your instinct and listening to the advice from your guide will guide you through any injury or illness you might encounter. |
